National Hawkers Federation’s Demonstration at Jantar Mantar, to Pass Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Bill, 2012 in Rajya Sabha.
The Hawkers and vendors from Delhi, belonging to the National Hawkers Federation gathered at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on 7th February, 2014 for a strong protest demonstration to pass the Street Vendors bill in the Rajya Sabha. The meeting was attended by several leaders from political parties and trade unions.
National Hawkers Federation (NHF) is the largest Federation of different hawkers’ and street-vendors’ unions, organizations and associations. currently 800 independent unions, organizations and associations along with 11 Central Trade Unions and affiliated hawker unions constitute the National Hawker Federation. We are presently active in 25 States and 1 Union Territory of India.
On September 6, 2013 the Lok Sabha passed the historic Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Bill, 2012 . The Bill provides for protection of livelihoods rights, social security of street vendors, regulation of urban street vending in the country. This Act would vastly benefit 4 Cores and and 20 crores of people including people who are depend on hawking, street vending and their family members.
Now, it is yet to be passed by Rajya Sabha. This is in accordance with a Supreme Court judgment. if this bill is not passed by the Rajya Sabha, then this Bill will lapse and again the process may be started from the scratch and that will entirely depend on the whims/vision of the next term of the Parliament.
In this regard, NHF Delhi had the Demonstration in Jantar Mantar on 7th February 2014, main demand is to pass Hawkers bill in Rajya Sabha. .
