Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad ends hunger strike

DIBRUGARH, April 11 – A 48-hour hunger strike launched by the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad , Assam (TAYP) at Chowkidinghee here in support of its demand for naming of the Bogibeel Rail-cum-Road Bridge after Chaolung Suikapha, concluded this morning. The organisation said that since Chaolung Suikapha, the first Ahom King was instrumental in assimilating various indigenous communities to establish a greater Assamese society, it would not be wrong to name the fourth bridge over Brahmaputra as ‘Chaolung Suikapha Samanay Setu’. However, the Chutia community has been demanding naming of the bridge after Sati Sadhani, the last queen of the Chutia dynasty.

The concluding programme was presided over by Bhabesh Gogoi, president, Dibrugarh district committee, TAYP. Central Assistant Secretary of TAYP, Deepjyoti Duarah said that Sarbananda Sonowal-led state government was testing the patience of the Ahom community in every aspect. He demanded that the state government should honour the great Ahom king by naming the bridge after him. Central General Secretary Joy Narayan Borgohain said that during the 48-hour hunger strike no one from the administration paid a visit to them. “It shows that the administration has no regard for democratic protest. The 48-hour hunger strike expired at 9 am, but an administrative official came to receive the memorandum only at around 11:30 AM,” said Borgohain. Prominent businessman and social worker Kushal Konwar was also present during the concluding of the hunger strike.
