Central trade unions AITUC and CITU have strongly opposed the government decision to allow commercial coal mining by private firms. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) vehemently condemns the decision of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) to open the coal mining sector for commercial mining by private and foreign corporate that too without any restriction on pricing and end-use, a CITU statement said. It said that so long private sector was allowed to mine coal only for captive use in power, cement and steel industry and debarred from selling the coal in market. The union said that such a retrograde decision by the Centre is nothing but a total reversal of the four decade long policy of nationalised coal mining which contributed immensely to industrial development as well as expansion of the power generation capacity in the country, it said. Such opening up of coal mining sector for unhindered exploitation by private and foreign corporate without any restriction on .

Half of Air France’s long-haul flights out of Paris tomorrow will be cancelled due to a strike by pilots, cabin crew and ground staff, the carrier said. The airline said today it expected to maintain 75 percent of its scheduled service but only 50 per cent of its long-haul flights and advised travellers to postpone their trips until February 27 at no extra cost. The staff are demanding a 6 per cent across-the-board pay increase. Management is offering a basic increase of 1 per cent to be paid in two installments and a range of incentives, which trade unions have dismissed as “small change”. The Air France-KLM group posted a 42 per cent increase in its operating profit to 1.49 billion euros (USD 1.84 billion) in 2017.

A court here today rejected Patidar leader Hardik Patel’s discharge application in a sedition case filed against him by the Ahmedabad crime branch in connection with the violence during an agitation by his outfit in August 2015. Sessions court judge Dilip Mahida rejected Patel’s discharge application, thereby allowing framing of charges against him in the case. The Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader is currently out on bail granted to him by the high court in June 2016. The court accepted the prosecution’s plea that there are material evidence against Hardik on the basis of which charges can be framed.
