Karnataka Transgender Samithi, a collective of members of transgender and intersex communities, community based organisations and allies across Karnataka, working to uphold the constitutional rights of the transgender communities across Karnataka, strongly oppose the passing of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016, in its current form and demand the immediate rejection of the Bill in Parliament this Winter Session.
There has been nation-wide opposition to the 2016 Bill as it is in direct contradiction to the landmark decision of the Supreme Court in NALSA v. Union of India (2014). The Bill in its current form contains an improper definition of transgender and intersex persons, disregards the right to self-identify one’s gender identity, sets up District Screening Committees to certify transgender individuals on physical examination, criminalises begging and is completely silent on affirmative action for transgender and intersex persons in education, employment and healthcare.
We strongly oppose this draconian and transphobic law and demand its immediate rejection! We demand a law that stops oppression against the already oppressed!
